ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini or Perplexity: which AI to use for which marketing job

Even the AI companies now send each task to a different model. Here's how a small marketing team can do the same, plus the three rules that matter more than the tool.

No single AI tool is best at every marketing job. The tools built for research link to their sources; others are better for writing, or for working with the documents you already have. Match the tool to the job, check every fact with a tool that shows its sources, and never paste in customer information you wouldn't hand to a stranger.

The AI companies have reached the same conclusion themselves. According to Digital Applied's guide to Perplexity Computer, Perplexity's agent product doesn't rely on one model. It uses a routing layer that sorts each request by type and difficulty and hands it to whichever of up to 19 models suits it best: research goes to models that search the web and cite, writing to models chosen for long, consistent text, and data work elsewhere again.

A small marketing team can use the same idea without any special software. Before you open a chat, decide what kind of job it is.

Match the job to the tool

Marketing jobWhat the job needsReach for
Market and competitor researchCurrent facts, with sources you can checkA search-and-cite tool such as Perplexity, or any assistant with web search switched on
Blog posts, emails, website copyLong, consistent writing in your voiceA writing-focused assistant such as Claude or ChatGPT, given your brand voice notes and real examples
Reading long documents: tenders, contracts, reportsHandling a lot of text without losing detailAn assistant you can upload files to. Ask it to quote the exact clause it's relying on.
Work inside your email, docs and spreadsheetsAccess to files you already keep in one placeThe assistant built into that workspace, for example Gemini in Google Workspace
Social posts and ad variationsLots of short options, quicklyAny general assistant, followed by a person choosing and editing
Checking any fact before it's publishedA source you can open and readA tool that shows citations. Then actually click the citation.

The brand names matter less than the column in the middle. Tools change every few months, but the kinds of job don't. If you know what the job needs, you can judge any new tool in five minutes.

Three rules that matter more than which tool you pick

1. Anything factual gets checked against a real source

AI assistants can state wrong prices, invent statistics and cite sources that say something else. Before a figure goes into a post, an ad or a proposal, open the page it came from and find the number there yourself. Tools that cite make this quick. Tools that don't make it essential.

2. Customer information stays out of consumer chat tools

Under POPIA you're responsible for the personal information your customers trust you with. Pasting a customer list, a complaint with someone's ID number or a spreadsheet of contact details into a free chat tool sends that information to a company whose data terms you probably haven't read. Remove names and identifiers first, or use a business plan whose terms you've checked. When in doubt, leave it out.

3. A person approves everything that goes out

Let AI write the first draft and a person decide what gets published. Tone mistakes, confident errors and promises you can't legally make (see what you're actually allowed to promise a customer) are all easy to catch before publishing and costly to fix after.

The other side: these same tools are deciding who gets recommended

There's a second reason for marketers to understand routing. The engines your team uses to write content are the same ones your customers use to choose a supplier. When a customer asks "who's the best [your service] in [your town]?", the routing layer treats it as research. That means a model that reads live web pages and cites them, not one that answers from memory.

So the page an AI crawler can read today counts for more than anything a model memorised last year. We cover what that means in practice in how AI engines decide whether to cite your brand. If you want to check whether your own site is readable to them, the free Prospectus Checkup runs five structural checks on any domain.

Common questions

Should a small business pay for several AI subscriptions?
Usually not at first. Start with one general assistant for writing and one free search-and-cite tool for research, and add more only when a specific job keeps coming up that neither handles well.

Which AI is the most accurate?
None is accurate enough to publish from without checking. The useful difference is whether a tool shows its sources, because that's what lets you check quickly.

Can AI write in our brand voice?
Reasonably well, if you give it real examples of your writing and a short list of what you do and don't say. Without that, everything comes out sounding the same as everyone else's.

Automating this instead of doing it by hand.
